Carnival of Digital Cameras & Photography #38

Carnival of Digital Cameras and Photography is a weekly round-up of all the latest news, trends, digital camera reviews, top blogs, photography tips and professional advice.

The times they are a changin'.

Film cameras are disappearing one by one and digital cameras are finding new and creative ways to attract the eyes of potential buyers.

Find out all about it in this week's Carnival of Digital Cameras and Photography.

The End of an Era - Film companies far and wide have been quietly closing their doors with the advent of digital camera technology. Konica Minolta stopped production of all of their cameras and sold their technology to Sony. Nikon announced that they would no longer be producing film cameras, but would focus on digital technologies. And now, Canon (one of the largest sellers of digital cameras) is doing the same.

Say Hello to Anti-Shake - What's the new digital camera feature that has the industry buzzing? Anti-shake. It comes by many names: Canon calls it IS (Image Stabilization), Nikon's term is VR (Vibration Reduction), Panasonic uses OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), and now Pentax has jumped into the pool with SR (Shake Reduction). All well and good, but is anti-shake really worth it?

Limited Dynamic Range - Cameras don't see the world the way your eyes do - while you can perceive a lot of detail from dark to light, cameras have a limited range, and turn shadows to black or highlights to pure white. The bad news is that every digital camera has limited dynamic range. The good news is that there are ways to deal with it.

The Zoom Effect - You can achieve interesting results with your digital SLR camera if you zoom the lens while using a slow shutter speed. The result is an image that has the element of motion, even if you are taking photos of static subjects. It takes practice and some set up, but can yield interesting results. Learn more about using the zoom effect.
